Do-N-Slide…..For Christmas?!

December 11th, 2008

OK.  On the face of it, maybe you think that Do-N-Slide wouldn’t make that great a Christmas (or all around Holiday) gift.  Here are a few reasons that might make you change your mind…

1.  Kids Really Do Love It.  There are maybe a few ‘chore averse’ youngsters out there that would be highly likely to roll their eyes at its lack of an MP3 player, but there are kids country-wide that love its vibrant colors, picture cards, and who cant wait (seriously!) to slide each card over to the ‘All Done’ column.  It’s kind of irresistible actually.

2.  Husbands Could Definitely Use It!  We are always being asked when we might be planning on adding a ‘Husband Pack’ to the product line.  We say, the ‘Help Around The House’ pack is already ideal!  Your hubby may be hesitant to physically put it into practise, but this ‘not-so-subtle’ hint that you could use an extra pair of hands around the house might just get him mobilized…..and then?!…..don’t let the board go to waste, use it with your kids to learn something new!

3.  It Would Be A Unique Gift For A Family Member Or Friend.  There will be toys, there will be candy.  You can either add to the pile or give a gift that’s unique and can be used for years to come.

4.  Its A Great Way Of Giving Help Without Telling Someone They Might Need It!  Maybe there’s someone you know that could do with a little help.  Maybe with chores, maybe with their toddler?  Maybe you feel awkward about bringing it up, but you want to help somehow.  Do-N-Slide could be the perfect option!  Using any of the reasons 1-3 (and then some!) you can give the gift of help without having to tell someone you think they need it!

Do any of these reasons resonate with you?

How Toys Teach – Important Life Lessons

November 12th, 2008

A slightly more serious topic as the title suggests.  I was looking for articles to share on this blog when I found this self-titled series on the ‘Games For Educators’ website.  The author, Phil Wrzesinski, discusses how important all toys are for teaching our children the life lessons that we would like them to carry into adulthood.

As parents, we jump at the chance to buy items tagged as ‘educational’, or ‘learning’…..and there are even brands dedicated to supplying us with toy after toy solely for the purpose of boosting the brain power of our little geniuses.

The ‘How Toys Teach’ articles made me stop and think for a moment though about how everything I give my son is teaching him something – it just might not be something I want him to learn!

The important life lessons identified by Phil Wrzesinski fall into the following categories:

Communication

Cooperation

Problem Solving

Planning & Strategy

Logical Thinking

Cause & Effect

He points out that great toys in some way provide experiences that positively influence your child’s store these life lessons to make them more fulfilled and robust.

I was pleased to discover, and am very proud to say that (in my opinion) Do-N-Slide provides ways to achieve positive experiences in at least 3 of these categories.  It reinforces my belief that this product can help many families.

For the time being at least, I’ll give an extra few seconds of thought to the latest Ben 10 figure my son is lobbying for, and weigh the lessons he might be learning from it against the desire he has to have the ‘latest’ thing.  I’m not saying I wont buy it anyway, but I’ll at least look beyond the plastic to how we can play and imagine our way into adding to his store of life lessons!

What Else Would You Like To Teach?

October 23rd, 2008

Here’s a thought….how many routines can you think of using a Do-N-Slide to teach?

You can use the picture packs that come with the board for learning the steps involved in potty training, helping your toddler move from one activity to another with much less fuss, and to get a little help around the house with your slightly older children, but one of the key features of this system is its flexibility.  We wondered what you might do with your Do-N-Slide when you have it in your home with the blank cards that come with each pack.

Do-N-Slide lends itself to almost any routine or sequence where there are a defined set of steps involved, and don’t forget that you don’t need to display a whole routine from start to finish – you can display only the part of a routine that your child is having trouble remembering.

We would love to hear what unique sequence you have used Do-N-Slide for in your home, so drop us a line or leave us a comment to let us know, and we have come up with a few suggestions for other sequences to put your blank cards to good use:

- Making a PB&J Sandwich (or any other kind of sandwich!)

- Writing a School Paper

- How to Clean Up The Bedroom

- Morning or Night-Time Routine

- Helping With Yard Work

- Homework Time

- Cleaning Teeth

- Cleaning The Litter Box!

Do-N-Slide for Potty Training and Toddler’s Day is Here!

October 16th, 2008

The excitement is palpable here at Our Kids To Yours.  The search to find a way of making the Potty Training and Toddler’s Day packs available to parents has led us to an innovative solution that increases the benefits and versatility of Do-N-Slide two-fold!

Not only can you now get Do-N-Slide with the Help Around The House preprinted picture cards, but we are offering (for a limited time at no extra cost to parents) a conversion pack that will let you use the existing cards for the purpose of Potty Training or managing your Toddler’s Day!  When you feel your child has mastered their potty tasks, or have moved into the territory of being able to help out around the house, you have all the cards necessary to use your Do-N-Slide for this new purpose – maintaining the continuity of a system that they are familiar with, and providing them with the best means to encourage their participation!

The theory is simple.  On our products page, you can select either Help Around The House by itself (and congratulations to you for making it through the potty training and toddler phases intact!), or Help Around The House WITH Potty Training, OR Toddler’s Day.  Which ever one you select, we will include in the box a set of professionally printed labels that can be affixed to the blank side of each card (a 2 minute job I kid you not!) and voila!…you now have 2 packs in 1.  When using Potty Training or Toddler’s Day, the Help Around The House pictures are hiding behind the scenes, ready and waiting to help you and your child when it is time for this new stage in their lives.

At Our Kids To Yours we are especially passionate about children, routines, organization, and helping you get the best from your family experience.  Its all about being a family unit, and having the tools to work together in a way that makes our lives less stressful.  Do-N-Slide is one of those tools that can have a big impact on your lives…go on, give it a try!
